M’hudi: Indigenous Wine From Africa

In 2003, the Rangaka family, proprietors of M’hudi Wine, the only black, family-owned vineyard in South Africa, left their successful professional careers and moved to the Western Cape of Africa in search of a new life. After several months of searching, they finally settled on a 42-hectare wine and fruit farm in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

M’hudi is derived from the Setswana word, “mohudi” meaning “harvester”. It is also the name given to the heroine of a great African story. In the story, M’hudi flees her war-ravaged village in search of a new beginning. Along the way she finds friends and fosters life-long relationships.

M’hudi’s story is one of courage, determination against seemingly impossible odds and the relentless pursuit of one’s dreams and aspirations. It is really the story of South Africa today and one from which M’hudi Wines draws immense inspiration.

2006 M’hudi Sauvignon Blanc

This cool climate Sauvignon Blanc is typically grassy with a fresh and lively hint of melon and passion fruit. The rich tropical fruit, pineapple and honey aromas contribute to a well-rounded balanced finish. This wine will complement salad, poultry, fish and light sauces. It can also be enjoyed on its own for its clean, crisp and fresh aroma.

Wine Spectator - May 31, 2008

“Mouthfilling, with lots of lemon zest, thyme, mineral and white asparagus notes and a long, tangy finish. A very flattering style, but it’s all there. Drink now. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.” – James Molesworth

2005/06 M’hudi Pinotage

In the glass, this wine displays a youthful, deep red colour, and on the nose, it is intensely aromatic, exhibiting plums and prunes.
Underlying spiciness and hints of vanilla further add to the complexity.

On the palate the wine is well structured with fine grain tannins balanced by sweet fruit. It is flavorful with good length and integrated oak.
This combination should allow the wine, under good storage, to develop for up to 10 years, but it can also be enjoyed now.

It complements rich food including most game dishes, coq au vin, and various cuts of steak.

It also goes well with savory cheeses and even dark chocolate.

2008 Isong Sauvignon Blanc

Isong (pron e-song) means at the fireplace or, in English, by the hearth, in the native Setswana language of the Rangaka family which is spoken in the northern parts of South Africa and in Botswana. The wine celebrates togetherness, sharing and companionship. These are the values deeply held by the Rangaka family.

This wine is beautiful, bright and light colored, with an approachable, fresh and fruity palate which offers citrus, guava and a bit of green pepper on the palate.

2008 M’hudi Sauvignon Blanc

The M’hudi vineyards in Stellenbosch again delivered good quality. A combination of terroir, cold climate and proper canopy management allowed the berries to ripen slowly imparting freshness and intense grassy aromas. The wine is 100% hand-picked.

Its appearance is brilliant yellow with a green tint, and it displays a refreshing but complex nose with hints of green pepper, passion fruit and citrus. Overall, the palate is fresh and lively with a balanced, dry finish and lingering aftertaste.

The elegant vibrancy and minerality ensure longevity and compatibility with food. Possible serving suggestions include: asparagus, oysters, light fish dishes, creamy cheeses or on its own as a refreshing aperitif.

One World: Indigenous Wine

From Africa

One World pays tribute to the heritage of the Koopmanskloof community and the precious land it inhabits. “Koopmanskloof,” Dutch for “Trader’s Ravine,” denes the profession and location of the indigenous community who embraced fair trade with the first European ships to visit South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope during the 16th century.

Today, this multicultural community still upholds its reputation as a fair and friendly trader with its distinction as the largest Fair Trade wine producer in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa.

Located within the Cape Floral Kingdom, one of the richest biodiversity regions of the world, the community actively supports conservation in the Cape Winelands by participating in the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI). Produced in harmony with nature, One World’s cellar sits alongside the community’s private nature reserve of 98ha fynbos.

One World’s wine is “Fair Trade Certified”, which means farmers and farm workers are empowered to lift themselves out of poverty by investing in their farms and communities, protecting the environment, and developing the business skills necessary to compete in the global marketplace.

Chenin Blanc

This light and lively wine demonstrates a fresh and delicate balance of fruit in harmony with nature.
One World Chenin Blanc is well-balanced with a crisp lingering finish.

Pinotage

This stunning wine is deep red, carrying aromas of plum, mulberry, and sweet prunes on the nose.
It boasts a dry, earthy nish and demonstrates a ripe tannin core.
One World Pinotage compliments succulent meat and pasta dishes and is great with barbeque!

2007 One World Pinotage

First Fair Trade Certified wine to be served onboard an airline worldwide.

Shiraz

A beautifully deep, red wine with aromas of plum, red berry, and cinnamon spices.
This medium bodied wine shows a lot of berry fruit with assertive tannins and a lively long lasting aftertaste.
